Is defamation only illegal if what's said is untrue?

If a person is suing you, then they have the burden to prove what you said is not true AND that your lies caused them some sort of tangible harm (such as losing business/money). If all you did was hurt his feelings, then take comfort in knowing that there is no such law that states you have to be nice to that douche.
