The Shining question--animal costume?

I read the book about a month ago, and I just watched to movie tonight. In it is somebody dressed in a fuzzy animal mascot looking costume in a room with a guy. I vaguely remember it from the book, but could somebody refresh my memory as to why someone was dressed in an animal costume? Thanks.
